01 · The story

Read the game, not just the numbers.

Each review opens with a short summary of who played well and which move decided the game. Below it, the key moments are listed in order, each with a plain note on what happened and what was better.

  • Ten move grades, from brilliant to blunder
  • Accuracy, average centipawn loss and a rating-aware verdict
  • Separate scores for opening, middlegame and endgame

Paul Morphy played a clean game; the Duke and Count made only 5 small inaccuracies. No single move decided it.

02 · Second chances

Find the move you missed.

Stop at any inaccuracy, mistake or blunder and play your answer on the board. Hindsight checks it with the engine, tells you if it holds up, and only shows the solution when you ask.

  • Works on every mistake in every game
  • Near-best answers count, not only the top engine move
  • Jump between key moments with one click

03 · The timeline

See where the game turned, and where the clock went.

The whole game sits on one line you can drag through. Key moments are marked on the curve, and the bars beneath show how long each move took, so time trouble is easy to spot.

  • Drag to scrub, click to jump
  • Clock usage for every move of live games
  • Shareable links to any move

04 · Explore

Test your own ideas against the engine.

Move any piece to start a side line. A live engine follows along with its three best continuations, and the analysis board takes any PGN or FEN you paste in.

  • Live top-three engine lines
  • Endgame tablebase for positions with seven pieces or fewer

05 · Improve

Training built from your own games.

Hindsight finds the patterns behind your mistakes, like missed forks, loose pieces or endgames that slip away, and builds a daily session around them: your own positions coming back on a schedule, plus fresh puzzles of exactly the kinds you get wrong, from the openings you actually play.

  • Your weak patterns, ranked by what they cost you
  • Spaced repetition for your own mistakes
  • An opening leak finder for any chess.com or lichess player
  • Play the computer from any position

Questions

Is it really free?
Yes. The analysis runs on your own device, so it costs us nothing per review and there is no reason to limit you.
Why is my accuracy a little different from chess.com's?
Their formula is private. Ours is calibrated against their published numbers on hundreds of real games and lands within about three points on average, but it will rarely match exactly.
Which games can I review?
Any standard chess game: search a chess.com or lichess username, paste a game link from lichess, or paste a PGN from any other site.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Analysis takes longer on slower devices; the Quick depth setting helps.
Do you track me?
Hindsight itself has no analytics and no accounts. Ads are served by Google, which uses cookies for them; where the law requires it, you are asked first. The privacy page lists everything that leaves your device.

How to read a review

Move grades

The numbers

Accuracy
How close a player's moves were to the engine's, from 0 to 100. Above 90 is excellent at any level. Calibrated to land close to chess.com's figure.
ACPL
Average centipawn loss: how much evaluation a player gave away per move, in hundredths of a pawn. Lower is better; strong players are often under 25.
Usual level
Compares the accuracy with what is typical for the player's rating: above usual, usual, or below usual.
Opening, middlegame, endgame
Accuracy within each phase of the game, to show where points were lost.
+1.20, −0.50, M3
The evaluation. Positive favours White, negative favours Black, roughly in pawns. M3 means a forced mate in three.
